About Tooth-Colored Fillings

Dental cavities are a common problem that are created when bacteria eats away at the tooth enamel. Previously, cavities were filled with a material called amalgam, which is a combination of metals, such as mercury or silver. Now we know that amalgam fillings do not adhere very well with the enamel and the mercury can be hazardous to your general health. At First Class Pediatric Dentistry in Snellville, GA, we use tooth-colored fillings made with a composite resin to fill and protect cavities. Board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Adesegun Tewogbade can also remove old metal fillings and apply composite resin fillings for a safer and better-looking cavity treatment.

Who Needs Tooth-colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings often fill in the decayed area in the enamel of the tooth after it is treated by Dr. T. Composite resin is a versatile material that may be used to address other problems with your child's teeth, including chips or excessive wear on the enamel by bruxism (teeth grinding). Since the material is colored to match the teeth, fillings can be placed on the front and back teeth for a great result. If Dr. T determines decay is more widespread, a stainless steel crown may be installed instead. This is done only if a filling would not provide enough support for the tooth structure.

Our Filling Technique

Getting a tooth-colored filling at First Class Pediatric Dentistry is generally an easy procedure. The treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), a stronger form of sedation, is often administered to keep your child at ease throughout the treatment. After your child is prepared, the affected enamel can be removed with a unique dental drill that Dr. T will select based upon the location of the cavity and the amount of decay. Once the enamel is removed and the tooth is disinfected, the area will be filled with the composite resin material and hardened. Dr. T will smooth the filling material so it matches the other teeth.

Your Child's Recovery After Fillings

Patients will be able to get back to their normal routine once the tooth-colored filling treatment is complete but may notice a sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for several days. Your child may take over-the-counter pain medication to address any discomfort; however, they shouldn't have any serious problems. If after a few days the filling seems uneven or high, please contact us. The filling can be kept clean by following a regular home care routine with daily brushing and flossing. At your child's annual dental exam, Dr. T will assess the filling and determine if it needs to be repaired or replaced at any point.

A Better Option for Fillings

Dental cavities may begin as a normal issue, but it's crucial to have them fixed before they become a bigger problem. At First Class Pediatric Dentistry in Snellville, GA, tooth decay and cavities can be addressed with dental fillings. Dr. T matches the filling with the shade of your child's natural teeth to give them a healthy, beautiful smile. If you think your child has tooth decay, contact our office to schedule a dental exam with Dr. T.
