Dental Exam Overview

Regular dental exams are an important part of your child's healthy routine. When problems, such as cavities, are diagnosed early on, they will be less likely to develop into larger conditions. These issues and more can be identified during your child's dental examination with board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Adesegun Tewogbade. While teeth are superficially examined during a cleaning, an exam consists of a more thorough analysis. Dental examinations at First Class Pediatric Dentistry evaluate your child's overall oral health by looking for signs of cavities, tooth decay, and other diseases. They are usually performed alongside your child's cleaning. Dr. T will determine the need for procedures and check your child's bite and jaw for problems. Digital x-rays will be used to get a better view of the health of his or her teeth, jawbone, and gums. If you live in the Snellville, GA area, we invite you to schedule an annual dental examination at First Class Pediatric Dentistry.

When Should My Child Have a Dental Exam?

Cavities and tooth decay can appear in infants as young as 2 years old so the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children visit the dentist before their first birthday. Dr. T can help with issues, like using pacifiers, teething, and baby bottle tooth decay. Our team at First Class Pediatric Dentistry can teach you and your child ways to clean and care for their mouth so they develop healthy habits early in life. Dental examinations are also crucial for older children as their teeth, gums, and jaw develop. We strive to help patients establish a lifelong positive association with dental visits by making their experience in our Snellville, GA office both stress-free and fun.

How Is the Exam Performed?

Your child's dental exam will include both cavity detection and digital x-rays. To begin, Dr. T will inspect and evaluate your child's teeth, tongue, gums, roof of the mouth, inside the cheeks, throat, and other checkpoints. This allows us to discover cavities and other potential problems. Additionally, Dr. T or a practitioner on his team will take digital images to check for abnormal gum tissue and cavities. With digital x-rays, the process is quick and results are available immediately. We will keep your child's x-rays on file so we can compare them to future images.

When to Follow Up

How soon your child needs to return will depend on the results of your exam. If Dr. T does not identify any cavities or other areas of concern, then the only follow-up would be to continue a regular dental health regimen with brushing and flossing twice a day, along with yearly dental exams and biannual professional cleanings at First Class Pediatric Dentistry. If Dr. T does see a concern that needs to be addressed, options can be reviewed and scheduled.

Annual Pediatric Dental Exams

True oral health means you can't just take your child to the dentist only when something goes wrong. We recommend visiting Dr. T at First Class Pediatric Dentistry once a year for a dental examination. We work hard to make dental exams a positive experience for you and your family so it's easier for everyone to stay healthy.
