What Is Sedation Dentistry?

If your child experiences anxiety and fear during routine visits to the dentist's office, they're not alone. Distinct fears about undergoing dental procedures are fairly common among children. However, not visiting the dentist prevents your child from getting regular cleanings and exams, impacting both their oral and overall health. It is for this reason that First Class Pediatric Dentistry offers sedation dentistry to help your child feel calm and relaxed during a dental procedure or treatment. Board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Adesegun Tewogbade will meet with you and your child during a consultation to thoroughly discuss the various sedation methods available at First Class Pediatric Dentistry. Let us help you find the best option to help your child stay relaxed. Contact our office in Snellville, GA to schedule a visit.

Sedation Options

First Class Pediatric Dentistry offers three types of sedation. Dr. T and his caring staff will work with you to determine which one is best for your child.

Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as laughing gas, is a traditional kind of sedation that provides mild to moderate sedation. Nitrous oxide keeps your child calm and relaxed while remaining awake throughout the treatment. Your child may feel lightheaded while the sedation is in effect.

Oral-conscious sedation uses prescription medication to reduce patient anxiety before and while undergoing the procedure. It is administered either by mouth or inhaled through the nose. This keeps the patient relaxed while still awake.

Intravenous (IV) sedation can be administered directly into a patient’s vein to completely relax them through the procedure. This option provides a deep level of sedation.

Hospital sedation is available for patients who may need a more in-depth treatment or require a higher level of sedation with monitoring.

Best Candidates For Sedation

Should your child experience fear and anxiety at the idea of undergoing standard dental procedures, he or she is probably a perfect candidate for sedation dentistry. Dr. T may also recommend sedation dentistry for patients with special needs or for those who find it a struggle to sit still. As there are a few different effective sedation methods for a variety of circumstances, Dr. T's staff will ask you a series of questions regarding your child's behavior and medical history to help determine which option is the safest for your individual child. Whatever a patient's needs may be, parents can rest assured that our experienced team will provide safe sedation using the best care possible.

The Sedation PRocess

The process for sedation dentistry will vary based on which method you have selected. For nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation, the main goal is to temporarily sedate an individual by placing a mask over their nose, which administers nitrous oxide gas. With IV sedation, our staff will put your child into a majorly relaxed state with medicine administered through an IV prior to the procedure. Oral-conscious sedation is carried out by providing the patient anti-anxiety medicine about one hour prior to their appointment to help keep them calm before and during treatment. Hospital sedation will be performed in an accredited hospital by a trained anesthesiologist.

After Sedation Dentistry Treatment

Prior to initiating any treatment utilizing sedation, Dr. T will go over what could be expected afterward. Teens should still plan to have a parent or caregiver escort them home after the appointment. After the procedure, Dr. T advises that patients rest and hydrate. Your child may be drowsy for the rest of the day, but the effects should wear off in about 24 hours. Usually, patients get back to functioning normally by the next day.

Dental Visits without the Stress

Anxiety and worry should not have to be a regular part of going to the dentist's office. With sedation dentistry at First Class Pediatric Dentistry, your child's dental cleanings, exams, and treatments can become positive and peaceful. Sedation allows Dr. T and his staff to attend to your child's dental procedures while he or she is relaxed, giving peace of mind to both you and your child.
